The process of creating a new website

Creating a website is like building a house. It includes different steps and phases, each requiring a different set of skills. It often starts with a vague idea, that matures over time in your head or during discussion in the project group.

I support you in all phases of the creation of your website: From the specification of the idea to the final website and its operation.

1. Concept

Based on your idea we create the concept of your new website. The concept contains et al.:

  • goal or purpose of the website: What do you want to accomplish with the website?
  • target group: Whom are you addressing with your website and its contents?
  • page structure: Which pages and contents should be displayed on the website?
  • details about available languages
  • special functions like e.g. contact form, blog or a product portfolio

The concept is the base for the next steps, because already the design should reflect the purpose and target group of your website.

2. Design

When the concept is finished, the next step is to create a graphic design of the website. Later on both the concept and the design will be used as a reference for the technical implementation of the webite.

Graphical design is not my area of expertise. Though, I cooperate with a handful of designers, so there is no need for you to find a designer. If you already have designer at hand, I will work with them.

3. Frontend prototype

After the design is completed, I create a so called frontend protoype. The frontend technically include HTML, CSS and JavaScript and is responsible for what the user sees.

The protoype includes all elements from the design and some example pages. This gives you a first impression of how the website will look on different devices, e.g. smartphone, tablet og your computer.

4. Integration into the CMS

Most websites today use a content management system (CMS). This allows people editing text and images without programming knowledge. I use TYPO3 CMS because it is flexible, fast, secure and actively maintained with a large community backing it up.

Based on the frontend prototype, I configure the CMS and the available elements. For most functions like news or a blog there already exist ready to use packages. Sometimes the website's functions require custom solutions.

5. Provisioning

After I have completed the integration phase, I will provide you with the fully configured CMS on a test system. The test system is password-protected so that no unauthorized person (including Google) can see the website under construction.

Now it's your turn: Together with the login details, you will receive instructions on how to use the CMS. With this you can immediately start creating pages and add texts, images and other content.

This phase also includes you testing my work. You report any issues you stumble upon during editing the text and trying out you website as a visitor.

6. Running the website

The website can now be made available to the public. For this I transfer the finished state from the test system to the live system.

The test system usually remains. Here you can e.g. try out content changes without affecting the publicly accessible website. I also use the test system to test technical changes or extensions and to make them available for your approval.

I will help you find a proper hosting provider for you website. I usually offer running the website for you for small monthly fee. This includes regular technical updates to keep your website secure.
